Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

Students must have successfully completed minimum two Junior Visual Arts courses in order to enter this course. Students must be prepared to keep up with all tasks, and attend holiday workshops while completing external portfolio assessment. This course caters to both academic and non-academic students, however good time management skills and an ability to think creatively are essential. This course is a pre-requisite to NCEA Level 2 Painting.


PURPOSE: The purpose of this course is to provide students with the ability to develop their ideas by obtaining the fundamental skills and knowledge relevant to a serious study of contemporary art. This course is a pre-requisite to NCEA Level 2 Painting which leads to NCEA Level 3.

COURSE OUTLINE

TERM 1 and 2 : KO WAI AU? WHO AM I? 

Students locate themselves beginning with objects at their desk, in the art room, expanding to the school environment, their homes and beyond to their environments (river /mountain/marae) and ahurea tuakiri (one's own cultural identity) beyond school. 

Term 3: PORTRAYING OUR PEOPLE EXHIBITION.  

Students will produce a resolved painting designed for an end of year exhibtion that communicates the identity and culture of the subject(s).

A Visual Art course designed for students who are serious about pursuing their creative ideas. This course is structured around Visual Art Level 1, National Curriculum Objectives and is designed to form a solid foundation of skills, knowledge and understanding of Visual Art through Painting.  This course covers 3 standards worth 15 credits. These are all Achievement Standards that require a strong work ethic in order to be successful.

IMPORTANT: Students studying Level 1 Art may go on to study Painting and at NCEA Level 2.
