Course Description
PURPOSE: This course builds upon prior knowledge gained in Level 1 Visual Art. Year 12 Visual Arts focuses on creating a stronger capability with regards to the making of art and in the knowledge of contemporary art practice. Focusing on methods used to generate, develop, clarify, regenerate and critique works of art, this courses enables students to gain and extend upon skills and knowledge relevant to real world creative industries. Students will explore their own ideas and study contemporary image making processes. This course leads on to Level 3 Visual Arts and to higher education within the field of Visual Arts and Design, including a Bachelor of Visual Art and Design with possible majors in contemporary art, photography, printmaking, sculpture, spatial design, digital design and more.
COURSE OUTLINE: Students are required to complete two major assessments, with an option to pick an extra assessment. Through the year students will focus on how to generate and develop ideas, work with visual languages, analyse and critically evaluate art. Ability to work independently and be self-motivated is essential.
IMPORTANT: Note: For the Optional Standards a further 3 hours of time (an extra line) is required and recommended.

Recommended Prior Learning
Students must have successfully completed NCEA Level 1 Visual Art to enter this course (12 credits minimum). Other students may gain entry at the discretion of the HOD or subject leader – consultation is required. Students must be prepared to attend Term 3 holiday workshops regarding external portfolio assessment. This course caters to both academic and non-academic students, however good time management skills and an ability to think creatively are essential.
