Course Description Recommended Prior Learning

Students must have successfully completed NCEA Level 2 Painting in order to enter this course. Students must be prepared to attend Term 2 and 3 holiday workshops regarding external portfolio assessment. Entry to this course is to be done in consultation with the teacher in charge of Visual Arts. This course caters to both academic and non-academic students, however good time management skills and an ability to think creatively are essential.



PURPOSE: This course builds upon prior knowledge gained in Level 2 Painting. The purpose of this course is to provide students with the appropriate level of skills and knowledge to effectively convey their ideas through visual language. Level 3 Art focuses on creating expertise in the making of art and in the knowledge of contemporary art practice. They will base their study on an individually selected theme. This is an ‘approved subject’ for University Entrance. This course leads to higher education (tertiary) within the field of Visual Arts and Design and the Creative Arts Industry.

COURSE OUTLINE: A Visual Art course designed for students who are serious about pursuing their creative ideas. This course is structured around National Curriculum Objectives relevant to Visual Art, NCEA Level 3. It consists of two major assessments in conjunction with Scholarship, with options to gain further credits in Term 3 and 4. All students will complete a workbook alongside their external folio submission to support their creative process, which may also be submitted for Scholarship. Ability to work independently and to self-motivate is essential.

Note: Academic students who have a strong interest and ambition in the Visual Arts may opt to study a second line of Painting/Photography at Level 3 in order to complete extra Internal/External Assessments. A further 3 hours of time (an extra line) is required and recommended.

SCHOLARSHIP - The student will use knowledge of painting to produce an original body of work.
