Course Description

The big question: What are we without plants?

Plants are one of the most important aspects of Human life. This course will give students the opportunity to investigate the importance of plants by looking at what makes a plant, how plants feed the world, how plants are grown and propagated, also investigate plant growing systems used today and future developments in growing systems that will help feed the exploding world population.

Plants are one of the most important aspects of Human life. Working in groups or by themselves, students will be given the opportunity to build their understanding of the structure of plants and the key processes involved in the growth of plants from seed and cuttings. They will have the opportunity to investigate different ways of growing plants from seed and cuttings and plants grown in provided garden plots or in small hydroponics / aquaponics systems. They have the opportunity to investigate the environmental factors that affect the plants growth from seed and cuttings. They will get the dirt on dirt, investigating the effect of soil on plant growth. They could look at different growing systems such as Hydroponics, Aeroponics, Vertical farming, Biodynamics, Organics, Permaculture. Also investigate Paddock to Plate, how food gets to you for eating.

This course has the use of the School Horticulture plots and facility.
